    The Deadly Armbar - 2/1/18

    Welcome to The Deadly Armbar.
Each Week I will discuss my feelings on 3 certain superstars.
Now I admit I am definitely a "realist" and a "pessimist", however, I am fair.
Feedback is not necessary but it is always welcomed

Asuka - Now I get it!, She's a great in-ring performer and she did amazing things with and for NXT. I just personally feel like the WWE is stuffing this woman down our throats! I personally think Nia Jax should've won the Royal Rumble. She has been on the main show longer and she's a goliath! Why have Nia Jax lose to the likes of Sasha Banks before her career got started on Raw? But now, she cannot beat Asuka? Why is this? It doesn't make real sense to me. The whole undefeated gimmick is getting a little old for me. She's not Goldberg. She deserves to be a main eventer but all I'm sayin' is bring her back to Earth for a bit. That's all! I am not hating on her success.

Matt Hardy - "WOKEN" Matt Hardy was a OUTSTANDING idea to not only rejuvenate Matt Hardy's career in the WWE, but it also allowed him to be relevant to the WWE Universe while Jeff is out injured. We all know for decades that Jeff Hardy was the Hardy brother that captivated crowds and put "asses" in seats. However, Matt Hardy is no "Marty Jannetty", He always seems to find a way to attract a following as well. Guys, let me be straight on this one. I loved the "BROKEN" Matt Hardy gimmick, and I was absolutely gassed (excited) that the WWE made him "WOKEN". The rivalry between he and Bray Wyatt...AWESOME! (sorry Miz), But, the WWE has jobbed him nonetheless, to upcoming superstars like Elias, but I mean c'mon why not have him continue to climb the mid card against the Heath Slaters and Curt Hawkins'. He plays this gimmick perfectly and the exchange of maniacal laughter between he and Wyatt is oddly satisfying. This rivalry grows weaker by the show because of their boneheaded unimaginative writing! (see Drake Maverick...really ? You couldn't of come up with a better name? Drake Maverick sounds like a two-bit porno actor.) All in all, We need this rivalry for Wyatt and Hardy. Unless of course this isn't in the WWE's long term plans for a gimmick. Thoughts??

Braun Strowman - The Monster Among Men, my current favorite WWE superstar. This is the most terrifying man on television right now. He breeds intensity and intimidation. He has wrestling skills for a big man and you will not get up to get popcorn when he is in the ring. If the Undertaker were in his prime, I feel Braun would be his ultimate rival. Imagine the possibilities!! I feel like Braun has elevated up the ranks, However this is the man you have to defeat Brock Lesnar and you continually don't make it happen!!! WHY ???!!!!! Brock Lesnar is NOT your future in this company! Soon enough, he will venture back to UFC to draw money! You have a monster you can build around NOW!!!! Do the right thing! But you won't.... you won't.....BRAUNNNNNNNNN!!!!

Thank you for reading! Comment below!

First off, welcome to the CF. I dig the name of the column; a little tongue in cheek never hurt anybody. So let's get into the meat of it shall we? Realistically, most people's first columns need work; no exception here. Now not every column has to be a 3000 word diatribe proclaiming the merits of Bret Hart or anything like that, but give me something to sink my teeth into. As it stands, this isn't much more than some stream of consciousness that you put into column form. There's not really a lot to discuss in terms of content, as each section could have certainly been expounded upon.

Let's look at the Asuka section for example. Here's a woman that's been undefeated for her entire WWE career. You don't think she should be. OK, I can get with that as I too think it's time to end the streak (or close to it), but you gave her a few sentences, and half the section turned out to be more about Nia Jax than Asuka herself.

You went off on a similar tangent in the Matt Hardy section when mentioning Drake Maverick. There's no flow there in terms of him having any relevance to Matt Hardy at all, unless you were somehow going to tie in his previous experience in the Broken Universe in TNA, perhaps that he got pinned by Swoggle in Total Nonstop Deletion. Anyway, this was the most well thought out section, and the one I most disagreed with. WOKEN Matt Hardy up until this point has been a total failure. It was something that the fans and Matt wanted to bring to the WWE, but in all honestly perhaps it was better left in Impact. It seems cheesy on the bigger platform, so hopefully with Jeremy Borash coming to the WWE he may be able to get involved and bring it closer to a cohesive vision.

The Braun section is fairly underdeveloped as well. He's big. Yup, that's pretty much the extent of it. He should have beaten Brock. Yup, I agree with that too. There's a lot to be said about Braun and his commitment to improving at an exponential pace. Hell, I just want a WWE Network show where Braun flips shit over for a half an hour. Anyway, lots more could be said here.

Play around with the format, thing more about your content and what it's saying versus what you're thinking at the time. There's certainly potential here, so keep plugging away and take a little more time hashing out the next piece.

    Welcome aboard.

I will definitely take your constructive criticism and work on this. This was a trial run for me as I have not written an article in a long time. I thank you for the kinds words.

I'd agree with Rob in that this showed some promise but felt underdeveloped. Might be worth reading around the CF a bit to see what others do, there's definitely no minimum length but something this short might as well have been split into a couple comments and simply added to the general discussion threads, which isn't bad either, it's just a different way to join the conversation.

As to your content, I don't think I can really agree with you on Asuka. I admit I'm rather tired of every single push being labeled as "down our throats". Asuka is well liked by just about everyone, and is actually booked strong instead of going 50/50 with everyone on the roster, which is one reason very few people seem to stand out these days in WWE. Asuka has something special, and throwing away her streak just because "it's getting old" isn't very convincing. Sell me on a compelling way to end the streak, and maybe we'll talk!

Regarding Matt, I was quite invested in the original "Broken" run, but this seems like a bit of a pale imitation that WWE is unwilling to fully commit to. I truly don't understand why people take issue with the Drake Maverick name though. We're not exactly talking Michael McGillicutty levels of bad names here.

I'm all in favor of pushing Braun as a top guy, perhaps the top guy, in WWE. I was rather hoping he'd move over to Smackdown and win the belt there, but clearly things have gone a different way. I think his time is coming soon though, and winning the title too soon can sometimes be the kiss of death to guys. I think Braun is past that point, to be honest, but then again I remember when everyone though Jack Swagger would be main eventing 'Mania someday. Sometimes time can reveal things! But it's also possible to wait too long, and WWE doesn't have the best track record. Definitely hoping to see Braun consistently headlining before the end of the year.

    Welcome to the CF, Bab!

Definitely more work needed, but the general idea for the format of the column is good. Pad it out more with some further in depth thoughts, maybe do more than just 3 topics (which don't have to be a specific person, there's much more to wrestling that just that), just get it to a decent length & you'll certainly have a regular reader in me.

Obviously echoing echoing everyone elseís suggestions, but my personal nitpick is that if youíre going to go with an unpopular opinion you need to stick the landing. You spent a good paragraph hating on every aspect of her success and then said you werenít which Iím assuming was to avoid upsetting anyone. Speaking as someone who often doesnít see eye to eye with everyone here I can tell you that no one here will be offended and youíre good to run with whatever you want to say. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for the feedback. Yesterday's Deadly Armbar was more of a feeling out process/preview. I am so grateful for all the positive feedback and constructive criticism. I promise that I will make it more in-depth and I also will take your advice to mix it up a bit but stay with my gimmick as well. I'm not a professional writer by any means and I can't promise my grammar will always be top notch. I will however, promise to give it my all. I actually used to write a article about 10 years back with LoP. I just got burnt out and lost touch. Now with more time on my schedule, I can do what I love.

    Hold number 1...ARMBAR!

You're already more clear in your writing and purpose than most of us were when we started, so that's a big lead on the field. Just flesh it out like the others above me said and you'll do great!

Hey dude, welcome (back?) to the CF.

As others have said, this was a little bit half-baked but that's not a particular surprise for an early column or one where you're shaking the rust off a little. I feel like the key word here is expansion, and that's not to suggest - in keeping with what others have said - that you turn this into a lengthy piece but more that you cover all angles of something.

For example, your Asuka section has multiple threads that can be pulled out of it to hit upon:

    - Why do you feel Asuka is being '[stuffed] down our throats?
    - Why should Nia have won the Rumble?
    - Why should Nia have been booked as strong as Asuka has?
    - Why should Nia beat Asuka?
    - Why is the undefeated streak getting old?
    - How do you bring her back to Earth?
    - Can you bring her back to Earth and retain the undefeated streak?

You know, that could be the bulk of a good column there, answering each question in turn with a paragraph or so focussed on it - a bit of a Nia/Asuka compare and contrast (assuming you think Nia should be in Asuka's 'spot', so to speak) and then a bit of how you would handle Asuka going forward.

So I think that's the main thing here - try and break those thoughts out a bit and then expand each one. It needn't be lengthy, but all I really got was that you think Nia should be pushed and Asuka isn't your cup of tea. I didn't really get the reasoning behind it.

The writing, on the surface, seemed fine enough - a little bit of overused punctuation here or there, but nothing that's really going to hurt you in the long run. Might be easier to work that out over longer pieces, mind you. The style is pretty relaxed, very much like I was just having a chat with you in the pub - I like that.

Keep on trucking, dude - looking forward to your next column given your comments above!
