Burn It Down - The Royal Rumble Game 2018!

Hello! Welcome to my favorite time of year, Royal Rumble season!

WrestleMania season gets all of the attention and love, but there is no more uncertainty in WWE than in the month proceeding the best WWE PPV of the year. I mean, who predicted Randy Orton would win last year? Nobody I'm sure(because it was so very, very stupid). This year, more than any other I can think of, I genuinely have no idea who is going to main event WrestleMania against Brock Lesnar or A.J. Styles.

Which makes building out the Royal Rumble Game even more challenging this year than last. Previously, with Goldberg and Brock Lesnar in the match, we had a pretty obvious pair of tentpoles for the game, and even though neither won, many teams featured at least one of these beasts(or Braun Strowman, who was the #1 picked wrestler in the game). This year? One isn't even on TV, and the other is the current Universal Champion(and has like a 5% chance of dropping the belt previous to the Rumble itself). So what do we do? Who exactly are the favorites? Well, that's what the comments section below is for!

And with no further ado, here are the rules of the game; pay close attention, I changed one small scoring detail!

    The Rules

    1. You have 100 points to construct a team of up to 8 Superstars. The point cost of each wrestler is below.

    2. Scoring is simple, it's based on the order of elimination. The first person eliminated is worth 1 point. The 20th person eliminated is worth 20 points.

    3. 20 extra points if your team features the winner of the entire Rumble!

    4. Post your team below in the comments any time between now and January 24th (the Wednesday before the Royal Rumble) and I will add it to the list of teams competing.

    5. The prize? You have two options, take your pick. #1, like last year, you can create a new signature for me to use until next year's Royal Rumble Game. Previously I had a very embarrassing, hilarious Roman Reigns love poem created by TheImplications(due to another lost bet); that could be YOU designing it this time! Option #2, you can write a fake advertisement for me to read, on air, during The Perfect Ten Radio Show after the Royal Rumble. Again, as funny or embarrassing as you want it to be(picture the episode of Supernatural where Loki makes Sam do an ad about his genital herpes).

That's the end of the rules! Now what I'm sure you've been waiting for, here are the wrestlers and their values!

    Theme teams!

And I was wondering if anyone would bite on Batista; he's talked about another mini-comeback for a few months now, so hey, why not start at the Rumble? Going Batista, Ziggler, and Bryan is pretty ambitious, I like it

Right then, time to beat Burn in a thing again (he never wins).

    Roman Reigns - 21
    Shinsuke Nakamura - 22
    Finn Balor - 23
    Seth Rollins - 19
    Bray Wyatt - 15

Don't even need those last 3 picks, still gonna beat you Burn! It's not nonchalance, it's an inevitability at this point!

    Team Dynamite:
    • John Cena - 27
    • Kane - 13
    • Roman Reigns - 21
    • Baron Corbin - 16
    • Finn Bálor - 23

Out of interest, what was Mahal worth last year? Not counting those who weren't listed last year, is he the biggest increase?

    Give me:

    Braun Strowman-25
    Roman Reigns- 21
    Shinsuke Nakamura- 22
    The Miz- 17
    Harper- 12

    Roman Reigns- 21
    Xavier Woods- 12
    John Cena- 27
    Jason Jordan- 16
    Batista- 9
    Mcintyre- 7
    Aiden English- 8

The teams are rolling in! Love that we have multiple bets on Batista

Also multiples on Xavier Woods and Luke Harper; I guess you have to assume that all of the New Day will be in the match, it's just funny to see him instead of Kofi or Big E in multiples thus far. Maybe that's just math.

Like last year, I am going to be fascinated to see how the "All the guys that could win" team scores vs the "Good value" team. Imp clearly going for the former, anon, Skul, and Spin with the latter.

I should add I didn’t look at anyone else’s before posting mine! Just seen that mine and spinny’s is quite similar.

I will go with my heart - who I would like to do well - than my head. Probably a reason I've never done well at gambling:

    Seth Rollins - 19
    Nakamura - 22
    Xavier Woods - 12
    Roman Reigns - 21
    Chad Gable - 8
    Aleister Black - 10
    Pete Dunn - 7

Shinsuke and Roman are REALLY popular! I think the point average for the top10 guys is slightly lower than last year, just an interesting thought.

I like how many people are picking at least one guy that's not announced for the match, it shows gumption. I hope Aleistar Black does debut at the Rumble, he's gonna be HUGE.

Crap, I didn't think of the logistics. Black isn't going to debut at the Rumble, his entrance is way too elaborate for that. Oh well I'm stuck with him now.

  15. #15
I let people change for a while, go for it if you want to swap him out. I do think he has a shot, especially since he lost the #1 contender's match and is clearly ready for the main roster...

Na, I'll stick with him. As I said I picked with my heart not my head. He is on the cheaper side and if he does debut then he will stick around for a little while I imagine.

Gonna just pick some favorites here and see what happens...

    Cesaro 13
    The Miz 17
    Bobby Roode 18
    Harper 12
    Sami Zayn 16
    Killian Dain 7
    Kassius Ohno 8
    Apollo Crews 7

I like the decision to go with the full 8 guys, I think bigger teams did better last year. I didn't love Dain at first but he's grown on me, especially after that fatal four way match a few weeks back.

Anyone think Rey Mysterio has a shot at returning? I get a feeling he has a chance. He's a big name and he's still wrestling and keeping his nose mostly clean.

I added Rey for 12 points to the list. So if you want to change or add him, go for it.

    ...dammit Cesaro!

  21. #21
Thanks Burn. I will make a complete overhaul, but this will be my only change, I promise!

New Team - Team Class of 2002

    John Cena - 27
    Randy Orton - 19
    Batista - 9
    Brock Lesnar - 15
    Shelton Benjamin - 9
    Rey Mysterio - 12

    Total - 91

Sorry, New Day and Wyatts! They're all likelier to be available for future Rumbles...who knows how long the antiques will be around for.

  22. #22
I mean Cena and Orton are pretty safe bets to be high entrants(no pun intended, Viper).

Batista, Brock, and Rey...well, good luck with that!!!

Probably posting my team after Smackdown this week but I've had ideas in mind for a bit now.

    It's the Tito Team!

How messed up is it that I'm legitimately worried that could win.

I mean, you picked 3 guys who could legitimately win, but also multiple guys that may not even be in the Rumble. It's high risk, high reward Unlike last year, a lot of people are betting on some non-full time guys showing up, which is exciting.

    ...dammit Cesaro!

  25. #25
I'm assembling my team right now! But because I'm a super geek about this, I actually do research and strategize.

So the first thought that popped into my head was "Pick the three guys you think have the best chance to win!"

And then the second thought in my head was "Is there any kind of pattern to the final 5 in each recent Royal Rumble?"

    Let's take a look!

    2017 Royal Rumble

    The Undertaker(29)
    Chris Jericho(2)
    Bray Wyatt(21)
    Roman Reigns(30)
    Randy Orton(23)

Wow, those are some big fucking names! Also, if you'd have picked PERFECTLY and had all of those wrestlers in the Royal Rumble game last year, your team would have cost exactly 100 points and scored you 150 points, 15 better than the winner. Hmmm....let's continue.

    2016 Royal Rumble

    Chris Jericho(6)
    Sheamus(21)
    Roman Reigns(1)
    Dean Ambrose(19)
    HHH(30)

Jericho again. HHH coming in at #30 was pretty obvious, which would have given him a HEAVY point cost.

    2015 Royal Rumble

    Dean Ambrose(25)
    Kane(24)
    Big Show(29)
    Rusev(15)
    Roman Reigns(19)

Dean in 2 top-5s, Roman in 3 straight. Rusev goes from the 2nd to last elimination in 2015 to first eliminated in 2016.

    2014 Royal Rumble

    Dean Ambrose(11)
    CM Punk(1)
    Sheamus (17)
    Roman Reigns(15)
    Batista(28)

4 straight for Roman, 3 for Dean, and 2 out of 4 for Sheamus.

    2013 Royal Rumble

    Randy Orton(26)
    Dolph Ziggler(1)
    Sheamus(11)
    Ryback(30)
    John Cena(19)

Cena makes his first appearance! Sheamus for the 3rd time, Orton 2nd.

So that's the top5 for each of the last five Royal Rumbles. What patterns do we see? Roman in 4 straight, Dean and Sheamus in 3, Orton and Jericho in 2. So a combination of big names/starpower(Cena, Orton), and really obvious up-and-comers(Ambrose, Roman).

What's REALLY fascinating about this list? Only two guys that have not been WWE World Champion. Out of 25 total slots, only Ryback and Rusev have failed to hold the big belt for at least a moment(though a few like Bray and Dean had to wait a while after their top 5 performance, they did get there).

There's a further analysis I'm interested in but not ready to do yet(the correlation between story involvement and finish in the Rumble). So for now, do what you will with this info. It has definitely educated my picks!

    Team Raw(And Tye Dillinger!)
    Cena 27
    Finn 23
    Joe 21
    Seth 19
    Tye Dillinger 10

Update: Anyone interested in doing a Women's Royal Rumble game as well? It's a bit late(I was waiting until all the rules were clear before I even considered building it) but it would be fun!

Sounds easy enough. I'll give this a shot.

    Shinsuke Nakamura -22
    Roman Reigns - 21
    Aleister Black - 10
    Sheamus - 13
    Rusev - 16
    Elias - 15

    I like my chances.

Also I'd be fine with a woman's rumble game ... though I expect everyone's team to feature Asuka.

  27. #27
I was SO CLOSE to including Aleistar on my team, I think he's great value. But I got burned by 2 dudes not even being in the Rumble last year, so I played it safe this time.

See, I'd just have to price Asuka high enough to make that not a necessity

I'm with everyone else, a Women's Rumble Game would be quite the blast. Especially as there's so many unconfirmed/unknown entrants, lots of risk in that one!

I did pretty good at this last year (I think I came about 3rd) so lets see how I do this year:

    The Miz 17
    Finn Bálor 23
    Shinsuke Nakamura 22
    Kofi Kingston 16
    Shelton Benjamin 9
    Bo Dallas 11
And if it pleases the court my last 2 points on No Way Jose?

  33. #33
Only because I'm a No Way Jose mark

Ok, I will begin to assemble the Women's Royal Rumble Game!!!

Asuka may end up being 99 points lol

    Roman Reigns - 21
    Sheamus - 13
    Shane McMahon - 7
    Strowman - 25
    Harper - 12

Went for a mix of favourites (Nakamura and Reigns, outsider Strowman), Creative being stuck in the past (Cena)
a pick based on the previous game results (Sheamus), Shane for the development of whatever the hell this storyline is at the moment. And Harper because I only had 12 points left!!
