LOP Pop Song of the Year 2017

As we're coming to the end of the year, I thought I'd ask what everyone thinks the pop song of the year has been. For the ease of simplicity I'm limiting this to songs that have been top of the Billboard Hot 100 or the UK Singles chart for more than a couple of weeks, otherwise we'd be have one hell of a list of things to consider. Plus, y'know, to be the best pop song, it kind of has to be popular, y'know? I'm also not thinking about pop too much as a genre and just using this as the one qualification, just to avoid any arguments.

There is an 'other' option there for anyone who really wants to be awkward!

Anyway, vote for your favourite here. The choice with the most votes will be the LOP Pop Song of 2017.

Here are the songs in my 2017 faces list that made either of those charts (out if about 90 songs):
Castle on the Hill - Ed Sheersn
... ready for it - Taylor Swift
    Everyone's Talking - James Heresy
    Run - Foo Fighters
Wall of glass - Liam Gallagher
Run For Cover - The Killers

I have never heard any of those songs. I have at least heard of Shape of You and Despacito, though.

I'm gonna cheat to a degree and seeing as it's the new number one, and I expect it to be for a little while at least, so should meet the criteria at some stage, I voted other for "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran. Think it's a much better song than Shape of You. Think it's his best song overall matter of fact. Technically it's number one as the duet with Beyoncé, which I'm not a fan of and prefer it sung by himself, so if I have to vote for it as the duet as its number one, make my vote a moot point.

Shape of You is not even top 3 Sheeran songs. Galway Girl is his best. Never sure to include songs that were technically released last year but peaked this year. If so Touch is probably the winner for me. Im surprised Feels didn't get more love as a summer banger. Symphony and Reggaeton Lento are right up there. I am really digging the new Rita Ora track at the moment. That said, I think my favourite might be one that hardly registered. Cry Baby by Paloma Faith.

Man, I loathe Galway Girl. Like some high school kids threw a bunch of Irish stereotypes at a wall and saw what stuck. But then if I had my way there would be no Sheeran anywhere to be seen.

Sam, can't tell how you voted from your post.

Maz, I think that was a vote for Paloma Faith?

Full disclosure, I don't like any of the songs, I literally only voted for Despacito for that spoof with the footballers names....

But yeah, it's currently part of a 2/3 way tie for the lead....

Mazza, I've listened to every episode of Right Side of the Pond and this is the most wrong you've ever been.

    Anyway, it's this:

With Reggaeton Lento coming in a close second.

Despacito deserves it for all International success it achieved and the fact it utilised star power to the max.

Swift is a guilty pleasure though.

Nope, none at all. In fact, probably only rivalled by my love of Little Mix.

I'm actually not an Ed fan in the slightest. I hated Shape of You the moment I heard it. I like Galway Girl and Castle on the Hill but neither would make my top 10 pop songs this year and I think it's been a pretty shit year for pop, especially compared to the last couple which gave banger after banger pretty much.

I was wrong about Carly, was thinking about the 2015 album Emotions.

So as it stands Despacito leads either four or five other songs by one vote (depending on whether Rob's post was, in fact, a vote!).

I'm with you on this - go back a couple of years and the pickings were a lot better. We should have done this for 2014/2015!

Oh mine wasn't a vote for that piece of crap song. I voted above for Taylor Swift

To cement my vote. It does say pop song so I'll go with Ready For It by Taylor Swift.

Not my favourite song of the year by any stretch but if we are talking pop it has to be the number 1.

So, the poll has closed, and there you have it. The LOP Pop Song for 2017 is Despacito.

That final vote coming in for it means it isn't just because of the footballer parody....

..... but it's still better than the original.
