Latta’s Lariat #27: Sami Zayn Saves Kevin Owens And Himself

The relationship between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn took another interesting turn at WWE Hell in a Cell. After nearly 3 years of war between them in WWE, and an entire career being linked together in some form before that, Sami Zayn did the unthinkable and saved the dastardly Owens who has attacked, belittled, and overshadowed him from certain doom at the hands of Shane McMahon.

Before Sami Zayn answers the question, “Why Sami Why?” we have to look at who we are dealing with here. Zayn has been one of the purest good guys WWE has ever had. In plain terms of what we‘ve seen, he’s had a major falling out with a lifelong friend, and after fighting him for so long, he’s just tired of it. Faced with the prospect of Owens being in imminent danger, Zayn’s instincts as a friend took over as he did something no one else could understand, but him. Even in what most consider a heel turn, elements of good shined through.

Growing up in a home where I was a witness to domestic violence, and following the stories of abusers and the abused as I’ve gotten older, the easy thing to offer as advice is, “Why don’t you just walk away?” It’s really not that easy. People stay long after they should go which one would assume is, the first time something happens. You can hope for change, but it is such a complex journey of the mind in the abused.

Relating that to this, Sami Zayn is like an abused lover who knows some of the greatest times he’s ever had were linked with Kevin Owens. After attempting to fight Owens for years, and do everything the right way, Zayn is no further as a star than he was the day he debuted on the main roster. No matter the rivalry that existed among them, Zayn and Owens can never escape each other, and now Zayn can try to recapture his own happiness with his friend.

Maybe it’s even deeper than it seems. Maybe tucked deep down in Zayn is a darker man who’s much more in line with Owens than we all know? In saving Kevin Owens, maybe Zayn saw it as a chance to save himself as well, as a matter of fact, I’m sure that’s exactly what it is. I think I’m even more interested to see what Owens has to say promo wise than Zayn.

    Hell In A Cell Ratings
    Usos/New Day ***** - Classic
    Orton/Rusev ***1/2 - Fine Professional Wrestling Match
    Styles/Dillinger/Corbin **** - Triple Threat Excellence
Natayla/Charlotte ** - WWE Getting In The Way
    Mahal/Nakamura **3/4 - An underwhelming reign continues
Roode/Ziggler **1/2 - Textbook example of a Terrible PPV Debut
Owens/Shane ***3/4 - Really long, Huge Bumps, Better Aftermath than
    match, Still good.

Looking at it from a meta perspective, this is the REAL Kevin Owens best friends storyline that he successfully pulled off with Chris Jericho last year. Both Zayn and Owens will be locked in to deliver some of the greatest character work each man has ever done, and this is a sign that maybe WWE actually does care about Sami Zayn no matter how many times they’ve beaten him like a drum.

Owens will continue his excellent career linear story arch that has led him from feud to feud almost seamlessly, and reach for the man he’s displayed his greatest chemistry with all at once. The possibilities range from owning the tag team
division, to Owens manipulating Zayn into a killer that does his bidding, or even the most extreme option…..Kevin Owens turning into a babyface.

This wasn’t about Shane McMahon, although seeds were planted when he dismissed Zayn on Smackdown, this is about Sami Zayn knowing Kevin Owens better than anyone, and we get to see a drastic change that could lead them to the promise land of Wrestlemania and beyond.

    Last Lariat

I thought Sami Zayn was our Ricky Steamboat. A career babyface who eventually would get his shot as a headliner, but produced most of his excellence just under that. This is a chance for him to flourish with new opponents, a new focus, and new purpose.

Can you say this turn is WWE admitting they failed with another face, why absolutely yes you
could. Consider this a chance at a mulligan, because if Zayn eventually comes back to the side of good, he will have another chance to live up to his ultimate potential. Zayn is among one of the most talented wrestlers I’ve ever watched and was the true heart and soul of the early wave of NXT. But those days are over now, and he is set out to either make or break his career, with Kevin Owens…the same guy he’s always done his best stuff with. It’s a stroke of brilliance, and couldn’t come at a better time.

It really is amazing to me that WWE couldn't figure out what to do with Sami as a face, but fuck it, let him try his thing as a heel for a while. The possibilities are indeed interesting, and anything that kicks WWE in the butt to do something with one of their most talented in ring guys is worth a try in my book.

I caught the tail end of the Cell match and, holy shit, Shane McMahon looked like a cooked sausage, but if he insists on working I'm glad it's with someone like Owens this time who can actually benefit from it. I seriously can't believe he jumped off the Cell again though, good grief.

If Shane wasn't a McMahon I feel like he would be one of the dudes pulverising himself in a bingo hall for a hotdog and fuel money, the dude is just insane.

On your column though, thank you so much for being the first person who hasn't just written this as a heel turn, it is so much more complicated than that, probably even more complicated than the Rollins and Ambrose relationship. I love that you said even in a heel turn his good shined through because that is what I got. He didn't have to do it but in this complete match of attrition he didn't want to see his friend hurt any further.

Comparing it to a domestic violence situation is so damn dark but the perfect analogy.

    Great column.

You're domestic violence analogy is perfect for Zayn, him saving Owens in spite of everything would be such an amazing step in an emotional storyline. Sami Zay staying face would be great as well. Difficult, unlikely WWE could pull it off, but great nonetheless. The face and heel dynamic has been tried before, but never to this level of emotion/seriousness.

I'd love for them to team, to have KO use Zayn for his own personal benefit and then turn out of control into a monster heel. Leading to Zayn slowly coming to terms with the fact that his best friend will never stop, he must be the one to ultimately take him down. But I bet they just go the Ryback route and have him be heel in spite of his actions for the turn not really being a full blown swing of the heel.

    Bloody good column Latta!

I think WWE could have done more with Sami as a face previously, yet for some reason they were incapable of doing so. How funny is it that whenever Zayn is involved in something that really matters it is alongside Kevin Owens? Ironic, then, that he saved the life of the one man that gives him relevance. All in all I'm hoping this all leads to a great redemption story.

That's it! That's the metaphor I've been looking for! For some reason I had raw chicken written down but I knew it wasn't quite right.

I'm fascinated by this, so much so that I'm writing something of my own about the Zayn/Owens stuff, so I'll keep my comments here on the briefer side. One thing I love (absolutely ADORE, even) is this concept of two best friends bound together and truly destined to do this forever, whether against or alongside one another. I don't know if this has been a long time coming, or if this has just been something they've made a decision on, but the reasoning and history behind it are perfect.

    More on that later, hopefully.

Anyway, good stuff as ever Rich - really great analogy work, too.

@Mizfan – cooked sausage lmao…I ate some of those this morning. If he wants to jump off the cell hey its on him…but I don’t really need to see it again. We get it dude…you don’t care about yourself lol. Like I mentioned I never thought Zayn would EVER be a heel but im excited for him, and based off that first promo as a heel he might be more than ready for this. Thanks for commenting

@SirSam – If Shane wasn’t a mcmahon I don’t know if he would do that, because he wouldn’t last long enough doing stupid stuff like that. He’d have to wrestle the next day lol. The domestic violence thing just jumped out at me randomly. I was live on FB after the show and blurted it out and thought I’d expand on it, glad it connected with ya. As Zayn’s promo Tuesday proved, everything made sense. It made me proud that I wrote this before the promo. Thanks Sam!

@Imp – Thank you for the comment man. Yeah Zayn HAS to be a heel now, I don’t trust them to do anything with any babyface. LOL. I think your idea has legs though, hopefully this leads to them fighting at Wrestlemania to start a feud for the post mania season.

@DON – Yes, they massively dropped the ball with him. But all he’s done is produce with what he was given. I think Strowman owes a great debt to Zayn for all he did to get him away from the just the squash matches. The only thing’s ive got outside of Owens are his feuds with Neville and Cesaro in NXT, and Strowman. I think it’s a lack of reps if anything.

@Oliver – that bound to do it forever statement is ringing truer every time. But hey, If its this good im down with it. Thanks for the props, I’ll be reading what you have to say on the topic as well.

Just wanna say thanks for including star ratings in your review, not enough people do stars with their review.

Because where else would put up with me and my mediocre writing.
