    Round 28 Update

It's been a while since I've had to be Mr Unpopular, but here we are. Quick reference to the rules:

'5) Any ambiguous answers are automatically thrown out.'

Consequently, we can't allow Wilkimania's answer of Carroll, even though it is technically correct, because - as some of the others guessed - Andy Carroll would have been as legitimate a guess. It's a bit of a hammer blow as it means Freeman, who did land the bonus this time, accelerates away and now holds a twelve point lead, meaning he just needs to avoid losing an average of three points a round to Wilki to wrap up the title. But, given the importance of this in the title race, I think the letter of the law needs to be applied. Nony is the only person to pick up a place in the top flight, catching the non-playing Mazza, and is player of the week in the process. In Division 2 no one is able to rein in 'Bear, and Golden is player of the week again, suggesting that his time at the bottom is a bit of a false position. Little chance of him catching Leaf with the small number of remaining fixtures though.

Only the second time this year.

By the way, look at the points without bonus points column. If we were scoring by that first of all, the top five would be 218,217, 216, 215, 214. Ridiculously close and it looks like bonuses are the only things splitting everyone at the top.

    EDIT:

    PRIME TIME PUNDITRY

It looks as though the season is as good as over, with a sizeable lead at the top of both divisions. But is that really the case? In fact, with four rounds remaining things could still turn around quite dramatically, and there's the other matter of some outstanding bonus questions to factor in.

I'm not going to try and predict how people will do in the last weeks, because that's almost impossible to gauge. But the picture on bonuses is more easy to estimate.

First, it might be more entertaining for the neutral, but Tottenham winning the league doesn't do a lot for the game. Smiffy and BFB would both pick up points for a Chelsea win. That means that BFB would avoid the record low score, but more importantly would put Smiffy up into third and just 13 points behind Freeman. It's still a fair way back, but definitely doable in three weeks.

Things could get still more interesting if Sergio Aguero goes on a goal rampage in the final weeks. He'd need to score at least eight goals, but if he managed to finish the season as top scorer then 2nd, 3rd, and 4th would all take 5 points out of Freeman's lead, and Gooner would cut the same out of 'Bear's lead in division 2. The far more likely scenario of Harry Kane catching Lukaku would see Sucky take the same amount out.

It's not guaranteed, but Burnley could yet finish the season as the highest placed promoted side. Hull might catch them as yet, but Burnley are still in pole position, and that gives me more interest in the title race than I'd otherwise have.

Most unpredictable of all is the 'where will Leicester finish' bonus. They can realistically finish with 55 points, good enough for eighth place. But that's unlikely. If they finish below thirteenth, no one will get any points, but they'll probably gain ground on their current position. Right now I'd back them to get 7-10 of their remaining points. That will mean that there is probably no real help in the second division here (they're unlikely to benefit Gooner, even though it is still possible), but they could help me, and Wilkimania in particular could hit the jackpot with this.

Basically, Smiffy looks certain to be five points better off as a result of these bonuses, and there's a chance that each of the chasing pack could be between 5-15 points better off. It's all going to make for an intriguing final few weekends.

Given I was absent for approximately 20 weeks of the season I'll take that.

Oh yeah, you've got to be happy. At the moment you've a perfect record as division 2 player of the round, so since you've been back you've actually shown title-winning form. Just a shame the tech has let you down, really.

I am still fuming I missed the initial bonuses while being away. Same place I am going to be for the next couple of rounds too. My aim right now is to avoid relegation but still have less points that Bear.

I think I still have the worst bonus conversion rate in both leagues - is it four right all season?

  23. #543
It is four, yeah. Though you're only one bonus behind a few people, so there's been a real variety in the success rates.

    Round 28 Update

A tough round this time, based on the lack of goals in the Premier League on Saturday. My defence of my title is falling away due to my inability to land bonuses in the crunch. Even a player of the week win doesn't really help me here, as Freeman extends his lead at the top of division 1, and Wilkimania edges away from me in second. 'Bear seems to be hitting some form since being put in the second tier, and has pretty much sewn up the title with three rounds to go. Play, and he wins.

    There are THREE rounds remaining.

Yes, to clarify the bonus question refers to a PERSON. Nony and Oliver, you've still got a few days to amend your bonus answer.
