    Image/Graphic Testing Thread

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread where people can work on facets of their columns using the LOP site. This is mainly for people like myself who are still trying to figure out all the posting features and looking to improve their final product. I figured this would include questions newer posters have in regards to columns on here. Double posting is expected, although you can edit a million times here.

As for myself, I'll get the ball rolling and ask how to insert images in columns (aside from the signature)? I've tried multiple times and it seems to just come up as code or not at all. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

how to insert images in columns
I've been having the same problem but Oliver gave me this syntax: [IMG]web address[/IMG]

I haven't tried it yet, but it should work. Attaching images through the computer doesn't work apparently, as everytime I do it, the images appear as a thumbnail rather than in their original size.

A lot of the guys use photobucket (or an equivalent) and just link to the photos from there. Normally I just link them straight from their source but I do use photobucket some times.

Subho- Just as I was figuring out how to insert images the problem you mentioned (Saved PC images becoming thumbnails) became apparent. I will say I've been tinkering with both Explorer and Firefox and Firefox is infinitely better for posting columns on LOP it seems. If you aren't using Firefox already that may help you as well as Zzzorf's suggestion. We will figure this out! (Glad to know I'm not the only one running into this problem)

Zzzorf- Thank you! I'll have to start using Photobucket. Does this alleviate the thumbnail issue Sub and I seem to be running into? (I might figure this answer out before you respond as I am bored at work atm on an overnight shift lol).

Whenever I used to post columns with pictures I just used the Insert Image button in the format menu, went to the URL part, put in the URL and unchecked the box (make sure you do that) and all was good. Otherwise just use the [Img][/Img] tags and that works too.

Got it to work. For some reason just going to the images online and copying creates broken links on here (it seems to be a formatting issue?), but Photobucket does work. I'll keep trying to make it work the other way as well but I will admit I can see why people use Photobucket, as it is made pretty easy. Just click to a pictures page, click the link button on the top and about 5 option boxes appear. The bottom one should be IMG for forums. Just copy that, paste into the URL image option on LOP for posting, uncheck the box as Zzzorf explained and boom.

Thanks Zzzorf. Out of curiosity, why don't you typically use images in columns anymore?

I do still use pictures in columns it just depends on the column. The main page however uses a different system (HTML coding) so I no longer need to worry about the forum version.

Thanks for trying it out, Kleck. Have a sig made for me that I couldn't use yet. Thanks for the tip, zzzorf!

Would .gifs work with the same method?

I have never tried but I see no reason it wouldn't. You would just have to try and this thread would be the best place to do it.

Zzzorf- I was definitely confused cause I know I've read quite a few of your columns on the MP and seen pics lol. I think one of the boxes on Photobucket was for copying HTML links as well.

Sub- definitely try it out on this thread. You don't have to actually use the material you plan on using in your column (I didn't, I just love Office Space lol), but I figured this thread would be a great place for people to practice at whatever they were trying to figure out. Glad this thread is helping so far!

Yeah there is an option for the HTML tags but for some reason it doesn't work for me so I just use the direct link ang chuck it in between the appropriate tags.

As to this thread there is normally one around here called the Test Thread so you just managed to give it a new name. It definitely comes in handy.

Would definitely try it out here before actually using it.

Okay, I'm getting really goddamned irritated. Whenever I take a few minutes leaving feedback to something and click 'reply' I get a message saying that I cannot perform this function since I'm not signed in (I am) and that I must reload the page. When I reload it, everything I typed out is gone. Been trying to leave column feedback and am growing increasingly agitated.

Happens with me all the time. I copy what I've typed and then reload and paste it in the reply box to leave feedback.

There are some issues with the site itself. People have asked Terry in the Feedback thread, but he has been unable to solve the problem.

He once said there is a 15 minute time limit for inactivity. That might be what causes the automatic logout.

Yep, that's why. It's the 15 minutes of inactivity. They implemented it as a way to help prevent hackers from doing what they did. I do the exact same thing Sub does (copy/refresh/paste/post).

Another way to help it is to leave your LOP tab open and allow cookies (don't wipe them each time). It's ultimately just an annoyance we have to work around in order for the site to be a bit safer.

Okay, I know this has been discussed but I need it broke down in even simpler terms. I'm currently working on a column in Word and plan on using images. Would it do any good to insert them in Word or will they fuck up when I go to copy/paste? If it's more complicated then that, then please help me. To give you an idea how bad I am when it comes to this shit, I thought syntax was a type of explosive, so yeah.....

No, don't insert them in Word, it doesn't help. Use the [IMG]web adress[/IMG] tags or just go to "Insert Images", paste the URL and uncheck the box. It'll be fine. There's a glitch when uploading the images from a computer, so don't use that. Any website is a good idea, though, photobucket and that "imgur" website (not sure about the name) works the best.

Just for the record, when are you posting your next column?

Don't know. I've already started it, but I'm not gonna rush it. I never in a million years imagined my first piece would be so well received, and I'm the type of person that hates going backwards. If I have a 95 in English Comp, then I consider scoring a 90 on my essay a failure. On top of all that, I'm having trouble explaining to people just how inept I am at anything except checking LoP and looking up porn. I suck so bad that your explanation didn't help at all. I appreciate it, but I just don't understand even the most basic HTML shit.

I thought that you were already ready with your next column by reading your posts. You must know that there is a 3 day rule in posting 2 columns. I really like your overzealousness, it's infectious and it drives me to perform better, too.

Why don't you try inserting images in this thread itself to try out what you understand?

Don't worry, I've recently went over all the "rules threads" so as to understand what is expected of me. I'm glad you feel the need to up your game. If I can be just a small contributor towards the betterment of this place, then go me.

    K, let's see if it works....Ortonandbarney.jpg

If you wanted just the smallest of sneak peeks into my next column, then there you go. I really need it to be bigger, though.

Are you uploading from your computer? Because I face a similar problem in that my full sized pics turn into thumbnails.

That's my column sig and I just pasted the URL and unchecked the box.

Yes I am. When you say "pasted the URL", you mean you copy/pasted the address bar, right? Like, I google the pic, open it up, and use that web address?

EDIT: Wait, I think what you did was just right click the pic and choose the URL option from there, right?

Did I do it right? First one was annoyingly small, and this one is obnoxiously big.

No. You open up a photobucket account and upload your images there (That gives you a singular platform for every pic, so you don't have to fidget if some addresses don't work), then you copy the respective URL of the pic that you want to use and click on the "Insert Image" option in the edit box. Click on "From URL" and paste the address into the box that'll appear. Then uncheck the "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" box and click "OK".

^ That's the actual size of the pic, I guess. You can always crop it and save it to your photobucket account.

Much easier, in terms of Photobucket, is uploading and then viewing the image. To the side are links that, when clicked, are automatically copied. Just click the bottom one on the list with [IMG] at the beginning and then paste it where you want your picture.

I would very, very strongly advise using Photobucket for all images you post in columns. Directly wrapping the [IMG] tags around the image's direct link, known as "hotlinking", is viewed as rude and is sometimes retaliated against. I specifically remember a few times back in the day when some clever fellow out there on the interwebs who didn't like his images hotlinked changed them all to pictures of cocks. Thus, about a day or so after the columnist in question posted his column about John Cena, all the images were suddenly cocks. The whole thing had to be deleted and many minds were scarred.

Photobucket is really easy. So is posting images. It's always been the same, so again, if you can't figure it out just use the [IMG] tags.

Uploading from your computer directly to the board is ass and never works, for the record.
